Hair PRP: What to Expect Before, During and After

Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy is one of the most effective non-surgical approaches to hair loss. Here is a comprehensive guide to the procedure, recovery, and results.

What Is Hair PRP?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss involves drawing a small amount of your own blood, processing it in a centrifuge to concentrate the growth factors, and injecting it into the scalp at areas of thinning.

The growth factors in platelets — PDGF, VEGF, TGF — stimulate dormant hair follicles, increase blood supply to the scalp, and extend the active growth phase (anagen) of the hair cycle.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

PRP works best for patients in the early to moderate stages of hair thinning — those who still have viable follicles that can be reactivated. It is effective for both men and women experiencing androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) and alopecia areata.

Patients with advanced hair loss where follicles are already destroyed are better candidates for hair transplant. Dr. Prachi will assess your scalp and recommend the most appropriate treatment during your consultation.

Before the Procedure

Wash your hair the morning of the procedure. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (aspirin, ibuprofen) for 3–5 days before, as they can reduce platelet activity.

Stay well hydrated and eat a light meal beforehand. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the session.

During the Procedure

The session takes approximately 45–60 minutes. Blood is drawn from your arm, centrifuged for 10–15 minutes to separate the PRP, and then injected into the scalp using fine needles at 1 cm intervals across the treatment zone.

A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to minimise discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure or a slight stinging — very well tolerated.

After the Procedure

Avoid washing your hair for 24 hours post-treatment. Expect mild redness, swelling, and tenderness at the injection sites for 1–3 days — this is completely normal.

Resume normal activities the following day. Avoid intense exercise, swimming, or direct sun exposure for 48 hours.

Results and Sessions Required

Hair growth from PRP is gradual. Most patients notice reduced shedding after the first session, with visible new growth appearing between 3–6 months. A course of 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is recommended, followed by maintenance sessions every 4–6 months.

Results vary depending on the degree of hair loss, individual response, and consistency of treatment. PRP is most effective as part of a comprehensive hair restoration plan.
