Wondering if laser hair removal is right for you? This guide covers how the treatment works, how many sessions you need, what skin types are suitable, and what aftercare involves.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy (laser) that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair shaft and follicle. The heat generated damages the follicle's ability to produce new hair, while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.
The treatment is most effective on hair that is in the anagen (active growth) phase — which is why multiple sessions are needed to catch all follicles at the right stage.
Which Skin and Hair Types Are Suitable?
Modern laser technology has significantly expanded the range of suitable candidates. The Nd:YAG laser used at Elements Aesthetics is safe and effective for all skin tones, including darker Indian skin types.
The treatment works best on dark, coarse hair. Light blonde, grey, or red hair contains less melanin and responds less predictably to laser energy.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
Most patients require 6–8 sessions for optimal, long-lasting results. Sessions are typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart for the face and 6–8 weeks apart for the body, to align with the hair growth cycle.
After the initial course, occasional maintenance sessions (once or twice a year) may be needed, as some follicles can reactivate over time due to hormonal changes.
Preparing for Your Session
Shave the area 24 hours before your appointment — do not wax or thread for at least 4 weeks prior, as these methods remove the root that the laser needs to target.
Avoid sun exposure and self-tanning products for 2 weeks before treatment. Clean, un-moisturised skin on the day of your session gives the best results.
What to Expect During the Treatment
A cooling gel or air cooling device is used to protect the skin and minimise discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a rubber band snap — mild and very tolerable.
Session duration depends on the area: the upper lip takes 5 minutes; a full leg can take up to 45 minutes. Immediately after, the skin may appear slightly pink or swollen — this settles within a few hours.
Aftercare Instructions
Avoid heat — hot showers, saunas, or intense exercise — for 24–48 hours post-treatment. Apply a soothing aloe vera gel if needed for comfort.
Use SPF 30 or higher on treated areas for at least 2 weeks after each session. Avoid picking or scratching any treated skin. Hair will shed naturally over 1–3 weeks after the session.
